3 Cheers for Rick Santorum

Rick Santorum pulled a trifecta in yesterday’s primaries in Minnesota, Missouri, and Colorado. By finishing first in all three, Mr. Santorum propelled himself into the top-tier of Republican candidates for the Presidency. The sting must be felt acutely by Mitt Romney who thought that Colorado was his territory. Even worse than Romney, is the rejection that Newt Gingrich received from the voters. Mr. Gingrich has positioned himself as the conservative alternative to Mitt Romney. Santorum blew past Newt in last night’s primaries. Rick showed in Missouri, with Gingrich out-of-the-way, he could get more than 50% of the vote; a feat that Romney has not been able to match.

The Missouri vote was a beauty contest without any delegates at stake. The other two primaries are a step in the process to award delegates from those states. So Gingrich will argue that they don’t matter. What does matter though is that Rick Santorum will now be seen as the not-Romney candidate that can win. Should his momentum continue, the next candidate to drop out of the race will be Gingrich, not Rick Santorum as Newt was suggesting he do.

If the Republican race comes down to Romney, Santorum, and Ron Paul, Mitt could be in big trouble. It is time for Republicans to take a closer look at Rick Santorum. He has a compelling life-story and a record that is consistently conservative. Rick needs to fix some debate problems. He tends to talk breathlessly and to repeat his points in the same response. If he realizes this and fixes those problems, I am sure he will be given much more respect during the next debate later this month in Arizona. It is easy to see that Rick Santorum’s candidacy has been improved by the nomination process. Early on he seemed to whine all-the-time about his lack of coverage. Now he has grown into a formidable candidate with valuable ideas on how to get the country moving again.
